25,000 mature teak trees die in Madhya Pradesh's Betul; drought and heat suspected

· Betul, Madhya Pradesh · Source: Down To Earth, 30 Oct 2026

In 60 seconds: More than 25,000 mature teak trees have died over about three years across 16,800 hectares of the West Betul forest division in Madhya Pradesh, forest officials say. Lab tests found no pests or fungus. Investigators suspect prolonged drought and heat caused hydraulic failure, where a tree's water-carrying tissue breaks down. Betul received only about 69% of its normal rainfall in the 2026 monsoon.

Why it matters

Teak is among India's most valuable timbers and Betul earns over ₹100 crore a year from it. Losing 40-to-120-year-old trees could be an early sign of climate stress on forests.

Explain it simply

Suck too hard on a thin straw with little tea left and you get only air bubbles. In drought, a tree's water pipes can choke the same way.

The 3-minute read

What happened

A tree-by-tree GPS survey led by deputy conservator Pradeep Mishra covered the Sawaligarh, Chicholi, Tawadi, Mohda and West Betul ranges. Dead trees stood scattered among healthy ones, with sound, unrotted wood.

Background

Teak resists many pests naturally because of compounds such as tectoquinone. A 2010 study projected that about 30% of India's teak-growing areas could become unsuitable as the climate changes.

How it works

In severe drought, tension in the xylem can form air bubbles that block water flow. If enough pipes are blocked, the tree cannot recover even after rain returns. Larger, older trees were hit hardest.

What's next

The findings will feed into the division's next 10-year Working Plan for harvesting and regeneration. Officials want dead teak removed quickly to save timber value and cut fire risk.

What it means for you

Forests near you also feel climate stress. Notice dying trees in your area and report them to the local forest office or panchayat.

Key numbers

  • 25,000+: Mature teak trees dead in West Betul
  • 16,800 ha: Forest area affected
  • 69%: Share of normal rainfall in the 2026 monsoon
  • ₹100 crore+: Yearly timber income in Betul

Both sides

  • Forest officials: Drought and heat are breaking down trees' water systems, so plans must reflect today's forest conditions.
  • Forest researchers: Dieback in South Betul is limited to a few areas, and monsoon waterlogging may also harm roots.

Key terms explained

Hydraulic failure
When drought blocks a tree's water-transport tissue with air bubbles, so water can no longer reach the leaves.
Teak
A tall tropical hardwood tree prized for strong, durable timber used in furniture and ships.

The story so far

  1. 2022–23: Satellite data show moisture stress in Betul's forests; first trees begin to die. Vegetation and moisture stress showed up in satellite data before deaths became obvious. Tree deaths began slowly around 2023 and spread widely in 2025–26.
  2. Feb 2025: Forest research lab finds no fungal infection in dead teak samples. Tests by the Tropical Forest Research Institute found no pathogen, including the fungus linked to teak dieback, pointing investigators towards climate stress instead.
  3. Today: Over 25,000 teak trees die in Betul; drought-driven hydraulic failure suspected

Exam notes (UPSC, SSC, Banking, PSC)

  • Teak (Tectona grandis) is a tropical dry and moist deciduous tree; Madhya Pradesh has India's largest forest cover by area.
  • The Tropical Forest Research Institute (TFRI), Jabalpur, is under the Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education (ICFRE), Dehradun.
  • Xylem carries water and minerals from roots to leaves; phloem carries food made in the leaves.
  • A forest Working Plan is a 10-year management document for each forest division, prepared under the National Working Plan Code.

Likely exam question: How is climate change affecting India's forests? Discuss with the example of teak mortality in Madhya Pradesh.
