Aditya wins 55kg gold at World Boxing U19 Championships; India end with four medals
In 60 seconds: Aditya won the men's 55kg gold at the World Boxing Under-19 Championships in Budva, Montenegro, beating Russia's Islam Magomedov 4-1 in the final. Megha Sheokand took silver in the women's 80kg after losing the final 0-5 to Russia's Ekaterina Frolova. Harshika (65kg) and Prachi Tokas (80+kg) won bronze, giving India one gold, one silver and two bronze.
Why it matters
Youth world medals show which boxers could fight for India at the 2028 Olympics and beyond. A gold against a strong Russian opponent is a big signal.
Explain it simply
Losing the first round and winning the match is like a chai that starts too bitter: add the right sugar in time and it still turns out perfect.
The 3-minute read
What happened
Aditya trailed 3-2 on the judges' cards after the first round but won the second round 4-1 to take the bout. In the semi-final he beat Azerbaijan's Nihat Gasimov 5-0.
Background
Aditya is also an Asian Under-19 silver medallist. Megha reached the final after the referee stopped her semi-final against Kyrgyzstan's Meerim Chynybekova.
How it works
Amateur bouts are scored by five judges; a 4-1 result means four judges favoured the winner. Harshika lost her semi-final 3-2 to Lauryn Elmore of the USA, and Prachi lost 1-4 to Russia's Samira Itonieva.
What's next
The medallists will move towards senior competition, where the next target is the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
