Cabinet approves ₹10,000 crore scheme to make shipping containers in India
In 60 seconds: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Container Manufacturing Promotion Scheme with an outlay of ₹10,000 crore up to 2039-40. It aims to raise India's yearly container-making capacity tenfold to 7.5 lakh TEUs. India imports over 2 million empty containers a year, about 80% of them from China. The scheme is expected to create 3,000 direct and over 50,000 indirect jobs.
Why it matters
Containers carry most of India's trade. Depending on one country for them is risky when supply chains are disrupted, and home-made containers can save foreign exchange.
Explain it simply
A chai stall that buys all its cups from one far-off supplier is stuck if that supplier stops. Making your own cups nearby keeps the stall running.
The 3-minute read
What happened
The scheme has three parts: ₹859 crore for 3% yearly interest subvention on loans for new plants and expansions, ₹8,891 crore of operating support for containers sold by eligible makers, and ₹150 crore for testing and certification facilities.
Background
India's installed capacity is about 75,000 TEUs a year, and actual output is roughly half of that. China makes around 3 million containers a year and dominates the world market.
How it works
The operating support is meant to close the cost gap between Indian-made containers and cheaper imports. The scheme also aims to help related industries such as corner castings, special steel, wooden frames and paints.
What's next
Detailed guidelines will set out which manufacturers qualify. The government also wants India to become an exporter of containers.
What it means for you
Steel, engineering and logistics jobs could grow in port regions where new container plants come up.

- TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) is the standard measure of container capacity, based on a 20-foot container.
- Interest subvention means the government pays part of the interest on a loan.
- Greenfield projects are built from scratch; brownfield projects expand existing units.
- The Sagarmala programme for port-led development was launched in 2015 by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
Likely exam question: Why is container manufacturing important for India's trade and supply-chain security?
