Centre releases extra ₹1.09 lakh crore tax devolution to states; UP gets the biggest share

· New Delhi, Delhi · Source: News On AIR, 1 Nov 2026

In 60 seconds: The Centre has released an additional tax devolution instalment of ₹1,09,019 crore to state governments, on top of their regular monthly share. It is the second such extra instalment this financial year. The Finance Ministry said the money will help states speed up capital spending and fund welfare work before the festive season. Uttar Pradesh gets ₹19,208 crore, followed by Bihar with ₹10,845 crore.

Why it matters

States run schools, hospitals, police and roads but collect fewer taxes than the Centre. An early, larger transfer gives them cash to build and pay for welfare without extra borrowing.

Explain it simply

Think of a joint family where the eldest son collects the rent and gives each brother a monthly share. Before Diwali, he hands over an extra share so everyone can shop and repair their homes.

The 3-minute read

What happened

After UP and Bihar, the largest amounts went to Madhya Pradesh (₹8,010 crore), West Bengal (₹7,866 crore), Maharashtra (₹7,022 crore) and Rajasthan (₹6,460 crore). Odisha got ₹4,819 crore and Andhra Pradesh ₹4,597 crore.

Background

A part of the taxes the Centre collects, called the divisible pool, is shared with states. Each state's share is set by a formula recommended by the Finance Commission, which gives more weight to larger and poorer states.

How it works

The Centre normally pays states their share in monthly instalments. When collections are strong or states need cash, it can pay an extra instalment in advance, as it has done now.

What's next

States are expected to use the money to push roads, buildings and other capital works in the second half of the year, along with welfare payments during the festive months.

What it means for you

Faster state spending can mean quicker work on local roads, hospitals and schools, and on-time payment of state welfare benefits.
