Election Commission extends voter list revision deadlines in Delhi and five states

· New Delhi, Delhi · Source: The Week, 30 Oct 2026

In 60 seconds: The Election Commission has pushed back deadlines in the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists in Delhi and five states, after requests from their chief electoral officers. Delhi voters can now file claims and objections until November 25 instead of October 30, with the final roll due on December 22. Maharashtra's window runs to November 13, while Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Nagaland and Telangana will publish final rolls on November 30.

Why it matters

An accurate voter list is the base of a fair election. More time means fewer eligible voters are left out by a rushed process.

Explain it simply

If the tea stall's monthly credit register is being checked, regulars need time to point out a wrong entry. Voters get the same chance to fix the electoral roll.

The 3-minute read

What happened

In Delhi, scrutiny and disposal of claims moves from November 30 to December 15. In Maharashtra, notices and settlement of claims run until November 25 and the final roll comes on November 30. Notice and hearing windows close on November 20 in Andhra Pradesh and Haryana, November 25 in Nagaland and November 26 in Telangana.

Background

The SIR is a fresh, house-to-house check of electoral rolls rather than a routine yearly update. Phase 3, announced on 14 May, covers 16 states and three Union Territories. Maharashtra's draft roll came out on 31 August.

How it works

After a draft roll is published, people can file claims to add names and objections to wrong entries. Officials issue notices, hear the cases and then publish the final roll.

What's next

Final rolls are due on November 30 in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Nagaland and Telangana, and on December 22 in Delhi.

What it means for you

If you live in one of these places, check your name in the draft roll and file a claim or objection before the new deadline.

Key numbers

  • 16 + 3: States and UTs in SIR Phase 3
  • 25 Nov: New last date for claims in Delhi
  • 22 Dec: Delhi's final roll

Both sides

  • Election Commission: The extensions came at the request of state chief electoral officers so the revision can be done properly.
  • Critics: Repeated changes to the timeline show the exercise was rushed and risk confusing voters.

Key terms explained

Special Intensive Revision
A thorough, fresh verification of voter lists, usually house to house, instead of a routine annual update.
Claims and objections
The stage after a draft roll is published, when people ask to add names or challenge wrong entries.
