Goyal says India is on track for $1 trillion in exports, with first-half growth of 14%

· New Delhi, Delhi · Source: DD News (PIB), 3 Nov 2026

In 60 seconds: Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said on Tuesday that India is confident of reaching $1 trillion in exports this financial year. Speaking at Kirori Mal College in Delhi, he said exports rose 14% to $480 billion in April–September. Last year's record was $863 billion, so the goal means growth of about 16%. Goyal said India needs another $520 billion in the remaining months, and that October was also a good month for exports.

Why it matters

Exports bring in foreign money and keep factories, farms and ports busy. A big export target tells you how hard the government is pushing to grow jobs and income from trade.

Explain it simply

Think of a sweet shop that sold ₹86 lakh of mithai last Diwali and now wants to touch ₹1 crore. Half the season is over with a good start, but the busiest stretch still has to deliver.

The 3-minute read

What happened

Goyal set the aim of $1 trillion in exports for the current financial year and said he is confident it will be met. He added that a $900 billion goal, about 5% growth, was an option, but the government chose the more ambitious one.

Background

India's highest-ever exports were $863 billion last year. The minister also said the IMF raised its projection for global trade growth from 1.9% to about 3.5%, and suggested India's export performance may have helped.

How it works

The numbers are simple. $1 trillion minus the $480 billion already sold in April–September leaves $520 billion for the rest of the year. That works out to roughly $87 billion a month, against about $80 billion a month in the first half.

What's next

Goyal said many countries want preferential or free trade agreements with India. October's export figures and the second-half numbers will show whether the target stays within reach.

What it means for you

Strong exports support jobs in factories, ports, transport and farming, and bring in dollars that help the country pay for its imports.

Key numbers

  • $1 trillion: Export target for this financial year
  • $480 billion: Exports in April–September, up 14%
  • $863 billion: Highest-ever exports, last year
  • $520 billion: Still needed in the remaining months

Both sides

  • The minister: Goyal says he is confident of the $1 trillion target, pointing to a 14% rise in the first half and a good October.
  • On the numbers: The goal needs about 16% growth for the full year, higher than the first-half pace, so the second half has to run faster.

Exports
Goods and services that a country sells to buyers in other countries.
Financial year
