ICMR starts four-year study of 200 families to find genetic triggers of autoimmune diseases
In 60 seconds: The Indian Council of Medical Research has launched a four-year study to find the genetic triggers behind rising autoimmune diseases in India. Researchers will collect blood samples from affected and unaffected members of 200 families and compare their genetic variations and immune-system changes. Six medical institutions, including AIIMS New Delhi and SGPGI Lucknow, are taking part. Kerala reports the country's highest incidence of such conditions.
Why it matters
Autoimmune diseases are rising and are often found late. Knowing which genes raise the risk could allow earlier detection and better treatments for Indian patients.
Explain it simply
Imagine a house's security guard who starts locking out the family itself. Scientists want to know why some families' guards get confused.
The 3-minute read
What happened
The multi-centre study will run for four years. Its stated goals are early detection of risk and the development of advanced treatments.
Background
In an autoimmune disease, the body's immune system attacks its own healthy tissues. Researchers consider the study especially important for Kerala, which records the highest incidence in India.
How it works
Blood from affected and healthy relatives will be analysed to map genetic variations and immune changes. Comparing them may reveal biological links shared by different autoimmune disorders.
What's next
The centres are AIIMS New Delhi, SGPGI Lucknow, St. John's Medical College Bengaluru, NIMS Hyderabad, Medical College Kolkata and AIIMS Bibinagar, coordinated by Dr Dipyaman Ganguly of Ashoka University.
What it means for you
If several people in your family have conditions like lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, mention it to your doctor. Family history helps in early diagnosis.
Key numbers
- 200: Families to be studied
- 4 years: Duration of the study
- 6: Medical institutions taking part
Both sides
- ICMR: Finding genetic triggers will help detect risk early and build better treatments.
- Cautious observers: Genes are only part of the story; results will take years and must reach ordinary clinics.
Key terms explained
- Autoimmune disease
- An illness in which the immune system mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy cells.
- Genetic variation
- Differences in DNA between people, some of which can raise or lower the risk of disease.
The story so far
- 1911: The Indian Research Fund Association is set up to fund medical research. The association was created to sponsor and coordinate medical research in India, especially on infectious diseases.
- 1949: The association is renamed the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). After independence the body took its present name and grew into India's apex agency for biomedical research.
- Today: ICMR launches 200-family study on autoimmune disease genetics
Exam notes (UPSC, SSC, Banking, PSC)
- ICMR is India's apex body for biomedical research and works under the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
- Common autoimmune diseases include type 1 diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and multiple sclerosis.
- AIIMS Bibinagar, one of the study centres, is in Telangana.
- The Genome India project, led by the Department of Biotechnology, sequenced 10,000 genomes from across India.
Likely exam question: What are autoimmune diseases? How can genetic research help India respond to their rising burden?
