Israel election ends in deadlock as neither Netanyahu nor Eisenkot reaches a majority

· Jerusalem, Israel · Source: ynetnews / France 24, 27–28 Oct 2026

In 60 seconds: Israel's first general election in nearly four years has produced no clear winner, exit polls show. Neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc nor rival Gadi Eisenkot's reached the 61 seats needed for a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Netanyahu's Likud is the largest party with about 27 seats. Turnout was 77.7%, the highest in over two decades.

Why it matters

Israel's next government will shape the Gaza conflict, the Iran war and the wider West Asia region, where India has big energy and diaspora interests.

Explain it simply

Two chai sellers each need 61 of 120 shop owners to back them as market head. Each has about 51. Now the bargaining for the last ten begins.

The 3-minute read

What happened

Revised exit polls showed the two blocs tied at 51 seats each on two channels, while one gave Netanyahu's bloc 52 to 49. Eisenkot's Yashar! party was projected at about 21–22 seats, and Arab parties at 17–18.

Background

Eisenkot, a former army chief, has all but ruled out governing with Arab parties, which narrows his path to 61. Netanyahu claimed victory, while Eisenkot cautioned that these are 'only exit polls'.

How it works

More than 650,000 double-envelope ballots need separate checking, so final counting could run until Friday. The Central Elections Committee said early figures are partial and may change.

What's next

After the count, the President asks the leader most likely to form a government to try. Analysts say a stalemate could keep Netanyahu as caretaker during coalition talks.

What it means for you

Israel is a major defence and technology partner for India. Stability there matters for trade and for Indians working in Israel.

Key numbers

  • 61: Seats needed for a majority
  • 120: Seats in the Knesset
  • 77.7%: Voter turnout

Both sides

  • Netanyahu's camp: Likud is the largest party and should lead the next government.
  • Eisenkot's camp: The exit polls show voters want change; wait for the final count.
