Phillips century powers New Zealand to record 259 and 87-run win over India
In 60 seconds: New Zealand beat India by 87 runs in the fourth T20I at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday. Glenn Phillips hit 107 off 49 balls and Michael Bracewell 65 as the hosts made 259/7, their highest T20I total and the highest ever against India. Jacob Duffy took 4-23 as India finished on 172/9. India still lead the five-match series 3-1. Arshdeep Singh became the first Indian to take 150 T20I wickets.
Why it matters
India had already won the series, but this was the most runs any team has scored against them in T20Is. It is a warning for India's bowling plans ahead of bigger tournaments.
Explain it simply
Conceding 32 in one over is like leaving the chai on high flame and walking away: it all spills over fast.
The 3-minute read
What happened
Phillips and Bracewell added 115 for the fifth wicket in 40 balls, and Nitish Kumar Reddy conceded 32 in one over. Tilak Varma top-scored for India with 35; Mayank Yadav took 3-48 on his return.
Background
New Zealand's previous best T20I total was 254/5 against Scotland. The highest against India had been England's 257/3 at Southampton.
How it works
India had won the first three games, so this was New Zealand's first win of the series. Duffy struck twice in the opening over to put India on the back foot.
What's next
The fifth and final T20I is in Hamilton on Sunday, 1 November. India then play five ODIs and two Tests in New Zealand.
What it means for you
Even a team that has won a series can learn from a heavy loss; how India respond on Sunday will show their depth.
