RBI eases forex reporting for small service exports and imports

· Mumbai, Maharashtra · Source: News On AIR, 3 Nov 2026

In 60 seconds: The Reserve Bank of India has eased foreign exchange reporting rules for service trade. Resident individuals who export services no longer need a separate Export Declaration Form; giving payment details to their bank is enough. Other exporters get the same relief for inward remittances of up to ₹10 lakh. Banks report service imports only if the importer is not a resident individual and the value tops ₹10 lakh. The changes apply from 1 October.

Why it matters

Freelancers and small firms that sell services abroad deal with banks and forex rules. Less paperwork means less time and fewer mistakes for them.

Explain it simply

Imagine a designer in Jaipur who sends logos to a client in London. Earlier she might have had to fill a separate form for every payment. Now, for a resident individual, telling the bank the payment details is enough.

The 3-minute read

What happened

Resident individuals exporting services need not submit a separate Export Declaration Form. Other exporters get the same facility for inward remittances of up to ₹10 lakh. On imports, banks report to the Import Data Processing and Monitoring System only when the importer is not a resident individual and the invoice or contract value is above ₹10 lakh.

Background

India's foreign exchange rules ask exporters and importers to report their cross-border payments through their banks, so the regulator can track trade. These amendments narrow that reporting for small-value service transactions.

How it works

For a resident individual who exports services, giving payment details to the authorised dealer bank takes the place of the separate form. For imports, only larger transactions above ₹10 lakh by non-individual importers go into the monitoring system.

What's next

The amended rules are already treated as being in force from 1 October 2026, so banks will apply them to service payments from that date.

What it means for you

If you are a resident individual earning from clients abroad, you can now just give your bank the payment details instead of filing a separate form.

Key numbers

  • ₹10 lakh: Limit for the exporter relief and for import reporting
  • 1 Oct 2026: Date from which the amendments apply
  • 2 Nov 2026: Date the amendments were notified

Both sides

  • Individuals and small exporters: Less paperwork: resident individuals can skip the separate form, and small inward remittances of up to ₹10 lakh are covered too.
  • Reporting system: Reporting does not vanish: service imports above ₹10 lakh by non-individual importers still go to the Import Data Processing and Monitoring System.

Key terms explained

Export Declaration Form
A form in which an exporter declares the value of an export to the bank and regulator.
Inward remittances
Money that comes into India from abroad, for example payment from a foreign client.

  2. 2 Nov 2026: The Reserve Bank notifies the amendments. The amendments were notified on 2 November. They cut paperwork for resident individuals and for small-value service payments.

Likely exam question: How do foreign exchange reporting rules balance ease of doing business with the need to monitor cross-border payments?
