Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan hold talks in Iran to stop the West Asia war restarting

· Tehran, Iran · Source: The Economic Times (print, 27 Oct 2026)

In 60 seconds: Senior officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan held talks with Iran in Tehran on Monday, trying to stop the West Asia war from resuming. It was their first joint visit since the three formed a defence alliance in Mecca in August. The four countries agreed to keep talking. Saudi Arabia faces weeks of attacks by Yemen's Iran-allied Houthis.

Why it matters

India gets much of its oil and gas from the Gulf, and millions of Indians work there. Any renewed war would hit fuel prices and their safety.

Explain it simply

When two big shopkeepers in a market quarrel, the neighbours step in to calm things down before the whole market shuts. That is what these countries are trying in Tehran.

The 3-minute read

What happened

Saudi Arabia sent Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, Pakistan its army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Turkey its intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin. They met Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and security council secretary Mohsen Rezaei.

Background

The talks come as Egypt has authorised military support for Saudi Arabia. Houthi attacks have included a missile strike that killed 13 at Riyadh's international airport.

How it works

The Saudi foreign ministry said the aim was to 'de-escalate between the parties to the current crisis'. Iranian state media said the four countries agreed to strengthen cooperation, especially on peace and security.

What's next

Watch whether Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia ease and whether shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea returns to normal. Singapore, meanwhile, plans to store Saudi oil in underground caverns from 2027.

What it means for you

Peace in the Gulf usually means steadier petrol prices and safer conditions for the Indian workers who send money home.
