Vedanta posts its highest-ever quarterly profit of ₹6,202 crore as zinc and silver soar

· Source: Kotak Neo / The Machine Maker, 28 Oct 2026

In 60 seconds: Mining group Vedanta reported its highest-ever quarterly profit on Wednesday: ₹6,202 crore for July–September, up 151% from a year earlier. Revenue rose 57% to ₹25,812 crore and EBITDA more than doubled to ₹9,938 crore, helped by higher zinc and silver prices and record mining output at Hindustan Zinc. Net debt fell by ₹4,624 crore to ₹3,675 crore. The board declared an interim dividend of ₹5 a share.

Why it matters

It shows how the global rally in metal prices, partly driven by the West Asia war, is turning into record earnings for Indian miners, and into dividends for millions of small shareholders.

Explain it simply

When silver jewellery gets costlier, the person who digs the silver out of the ground earns the most. Vedanta owns the mine, so higher prices go straight into its pocket.

The 3-minute read

What happened

Hindustan Zinc mined a record 2.71 lakh tonnes of metal, up 5%, and produced 173 tonnes of silver, up 20%. Average zinc prices rose 35% and silver prices 59% from a year ago.

Background

Vedanta's businesses span zinc, silver, copper, ferrochrome and ports. Its Gamsberg Phase II project in South Africa added 2 lakh tonnes a year of zinc capacity.

How it works

Higher prices, a favourable exchange rate and bigger volumes lifted earnings, while zinc production costs in India fell 29% to $703 a tonne. Not everything was rosy: international copper sales fell 74% because of shipping disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

What's next

The company says it will keep investing in capacity expansion and new mines. Its future earnings depend on whether metal prices stay high.

What it means for you

Vedanta shares rose 3.3% to ₹233.05 on the NSE on Wednesday. Remember that metal prices swing a lot, so record profits in one quarter are not guaranteed to repeat.

Key numbers

  • ₹6,202 cr: Profit in July–September, up 151%
  • ₹25,812 cr: Revenue, up 57%
  • ₹3,675 cr: Net debt on 30 September
  • ₹5: Interim dividend per share

Both sides

  • The company: Strong cash generation has cut debt and lets it keep investing in zinc, copper and ferrochrome growth.
  • Cautious investors: Much of the jump comes from high commodity prices, which can fall as quickly as they rose.

Key terms explained

EBITDA
Earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation: a measure of the profit a business makes from its operations.
Net debt
A company's total borrowings minus the cash and cash equivalents it holds.

The story so far

  1. Apr 2002: Government sells a stake in Hindustan Zinc to the Vedanta group. In 2002, as part of disinvestment, the government sold a 26% stake and management control of Hindustan Zinc to Sterlite, a Vedanta group company. Hindustan Zinc is now the group's biggest earner.
  2. 28 Feb 2026: US-Israeli strikes on Iran start a war that disrupts Gulf shipping. The war in West Asia pushed up commodity prices and disrupted trade through the Strait of Hormuz, affecting companies that buy and sell metals across the world.
  3. Today: Vedanta posts record ₹6,202 crore quarterly profit on zinc and silver prices
