Youth Olympic Games open in Dakar, first Olympic event in Africa; India send 17
In 60 seconds: The fourth Youth Olympic Games began in Dakar, Senegal, with an opening ceremony on Saturday, making it the first Olympic sporting event ever held in Africa. About 2,655 young athletes from 205 delegations will compete in 25 sports until 13 November. India has sent a 17-member contingent of 11 women and six men across 11 sports. Swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu and shuttler Dev Ruparelia carried India's flag.
Why it matters
The Olympic movement has finally reached Africa, the only inhabited continent never to have hosted an Olympic event. For India, these Games are a first look at teenagers who may compete at future Olympics.
Explain it simply
The Youth Olympics are the Olympics' junior college: same campus spirit, smaller classrooms, and plenty of future toppers.
The 3-minute read
What happened
Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared the Games open at Stade Abdoulaye Wade, with IOC President Kirsty Coventry present. Greece led the athletes' parade, the Refugee Olympic Team came second and hosts Senegal came last.
Background
India has taken part in all three earlier editions and won 23 medals (three gold, 16 silver, four bronze). Its best campaign was Buenos Aires 2018 with 13 medals.
How it works
The Youth Olympics are for athletes aged 14 to 17. Some events use mixed teams of athletes from different countries; India's four such medals do not count in its official tally.
What's next
Competition runs across Dakar, Saly and Diamniadio until 13 November. India's first-day entries include badminton, swimming and wushu.
What it means for you
Many senior Olympians first made their name at youth events. Note today's names: some may be the answers to exam questions a few years from now.
